We were wandering around on the morning of our second day of the Strasbourg excursion, and spent a good chunk of time looking around the cathedral. The sky was mostly clear that day, though it was punctuated by the occasional small cloud.
When I saw this cloud floating above the cathedral like this, and from this perspective, I couldn't help but think that it looked like the second tower of the cathedral had gone *poof* in a cloud of smoke or something.
Taken in color, with whatever stats are listed on the side here (don't remember what the shutter speed and aperture were and all that). Once in Photoshop, I added a red filter, converted to black and white, and tweaked the contrast a little. I don't currently have any fancy filters for my camera, so for the time being, hopefully I can improvise a few in Photoshop.
There's an intersting conrast in the photo, between the old, ornate cathedral, and the modern- looking building (apartments? offices?) with its clean lines... quite interesting.

I am madly jealous of you and your fancy travelling, and your camera which is far superior to mine, but I'm adding this to my favorties anyway!
Have fun with the rest of your abroad time!

I'm thinking it's apartments, but I'm not entirely certain. But the contrast between the buildings is another of the things that I found interesting about this photo myself. Not sure if it crossed my mind when I was taking it, or just when I was reviewing it on my computer.
Hehehe, I'm glad you like the photo. One of the things I'm realizing with this camera is that I really didn't take advantage of my last camera's abilities. And this one's not even anything particularly fancy. Someday I may have to invest in a nice digital SLR or something, but the current camera will do nicely for now, with snapshots and artistic stuff alike.
But regardless of your camera, there's nothing keeping you from taking some awesome shots (though the thing that always held me back was the lack of a resolution that could be printed at a decent size). But I think I've learned that limitations of the artistic medium shouldn't infringe upon the reach of your artistic eye.
And on that note, I shall now be off to take a gander through your gallery...
It's always nice when you take a look at a photo later, and realize that you did somehing really nifty without even realizing it. For every photo I intend to make meaningful, there are bunches that just surprise me.

Agreed. I haven't really kept track of how many intentionally artistic ones turn out nice, but my artistic process definitely has a huge rupture between taking the picture and rendering it nice. I go out, take my photos, then go home. Wait a day or two. Or months. And then I go through my photos looking for the ones that strike me as neat. Sometimes I think I end up at the same places as I was intending when I took the photos, and sometimes I find ones that I never expected to be any good.

Have you ever wondered what something meant as far as Photography goes? Things like "Cable Release", "AEB", "C-41", "Neutral density filter", and "Polarizer"? The photonotes.org Dictionary of Film and Digital Photography is one place to stop and get it all answered. This is quite a valuable resource that explains in depth what a photography term means, and will help those understand who might not know what something is.
